Upcoming SiN Workshops — for Writers and Would-be Writers

Join us for 'The Writing Journey', and 'You can write for Chicken Soup for the Soul'.

Join us for ‘The Writer’s Map to Everywhere’, and ‘You can write for Chicken Soup for the Soul’.

Are you a writer or just have an inkling that you’d like to try your hand at it? Perhaps you just want to learn some new skills? Or maybe you just like hanging out with published authors? Stories in the North is calling all of you to take part in one or both of the upcoming writing workshops to take place in Thessalon on Saturday, May 3rd.

The first of those two workshops will be led by author Charles Wilkins. Charlie–as SiN members refer to him–will be in town as the headliner for this day-long author event. Following the workshops, Charlie will join us at the IOOF Hall (in Thessalon) for an evening performance which will see him reading from his latest book, Little Ship of Fools, a true adventure story about rowing across the Atlantic. (He’s written about 15 books!)

Charlie was a guest author at one of our first author events a few years ago…in fact, here’s a photo of him from that visit back in 2009. (Did you know that visit was where Charlie first got the idea of joining that group of rowers in a quest to set a record? He even says so in Little Ship of Fools.)

Charles Wilkins (2)

We’re so excited five years later to have Charlie back—with the new book and a new workshop!

Here’s the workshop details:

10 a.m. Workshop with Charles Wilkins

The Writer’s Map to Everywhere: Putting the Story on the Road
Join Charlie for this interactive workshop in which participants will take part in writing exercises as they explore the elements of good journey writing.  Think pace, imagery, movement, risk, revelation, drama, a sense of the planet, and of course good storytelling. Charlie will lead by example and will call on participants to join in two different writing exercises. Participants will leave with a heightened awareness of their responsibility to stimulate and provoke the reader, without lapses –as the journey and story unfold. Trust us: Charlie knows a good story. He’s published a number of good books including In the Land of Long Fingernails, Walk to New York and Paddle to the Amazon. Some of them are available at Thessalon Public Library!

2 p.m. Workshop  with Gloria Jean Hansen

You can write for CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL!
As publishers of the best-selling tradebook series of all time, the folks at Chicken Soup for the Soul are always looking for new stories. Just ask Elliot Lake’s Gloria Hansen. She’s recently had four stories accepted for publication. At this workshop you’ll look at how to write your story using all five senses and craft it in a way that will stir the emotions of your reader.
Participants will gain new skills and renewed motivation to tell their story. Feel free to bring along a personal event story to share during the workshop.

To register for workshops, contact Angie Gallop at 705-842-2451. Cost is $25.00 for one or $40.00 for both. Workshops take place in the basement of Zion United Church, 224 Main St., Thessalon.

Don’t miss the evening show!

The evening show is open to everyone. Whether you love writing, reading, or just a great entertaining evening out, please join us at the IOOF Hall 146 Main St., at 7 pm for a fun party celebrating Charlie Wilkin’s latest book Little Ship of Fools. Cost is just $10.00. The evening will feature Wilkins reading from his works and will be interspersed with music fitting the occasion by local musicians Al St. Pierre and Len Doi. They’ll be accompanied by Peter Evans on bass. Be prepared for a great, free snack buffet served up by ladies from the local Rebekah Lodge. Free coffee and a cash bar will also be available.

People always leave this evening feeling refreshed. If you are a reader and Wilkins fan, there will be books available to purchase and have Charlie sign. If you are a writer, this is a great opportunity to meet other writers in the area.
