Charlie Wilkins: A Peek into the Writing Life. Don’t miss our May 3 Workshops!

“I thought I wouldn’t say things to offend anyone but, before long, I realized I needed to portray people as I perceived them for the theatre of the story.”

-Charles Wilkins, who spent more than a month with 16 other people on a tiny boat rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. Then he wrote a book about the experience.

SiN writer Pauline Clark has written a fantastic article about our May 3rd visiting author Charlie Wilkins. In it, she asked him the question that most writers agonize about “What if I piss off my friends?”

Wilkins is candid in his answers and ultimately sheds light on why we must be brave to tell our own stories. Check out the story here. Then, sign up for a workshop with Wilkins and Elliot Lake author Gloria Hansen for a day of inspiration and writing aimed at helping you write your own life’s stories.

Workshops are on Saturday, May 3rd.  At $25 for one or $40 for both, they come at the fraction of the price of most workshops. To save your spot, call Angie at 705-842-2451 or e-mail  Give us your name, e-mail and phone number where we can reach you. For more information, check out the descriptions below.

10 a.m. Workshop with Charles Wilkins

The Writer’s Map to Everywhere: Putting the Story on the Road
Join Charlie for this interactive workshop in which participants will take part in writing exercises as they explore the elements of good journey writing.  Think pace, imagery, movement, risk, revelation, drama, a sense of the planet, and of course good storytelling. Charlie will lead by example and will call on participants to join in two different writing exercises. Participants will leave with a heightened awareness of their responsibility to stimulate and provoke the reader, without lapses –as the journey and story unfold. Trust us: Charlie knows a good story. He’s published a number of good books including In the Land of Long Fingernails, Walk to New York and Paddle to the Amazon. Some of them are available at Thessalon Public Library!
